The production of fake car parts, including brake pads, spark plugs, tire rims, seatbelts, airbags, car seats, air filters, and headlights, is the main form of counterfeiting in the automotive sector. Trademarks (when original manufacturer names and logos are incorrectly used on items) and designs (when registered designs are illegally copied, usually by low-cost producers) are the most common types of intellectual property that are violated. In addition to diluting a brand and damaging a company's reputation, fake auto parts are a major public safety concern. Defective counterfeit vehicle parts are responsible for more than 35,000 annual deaths and 1.5 million injuries, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Studies have also connected fake auto parts to dangerous emissions.
